Mike Smart, an Assembler at the S&R Manufacturing truss plant in Huntsville, Alabama, received the July Above & Beyond Award for putting in extra time when we were short-staffed.
Craig Apperson, Assistant General Manager of City Lumber, nominated Smart for the Above & Beyond Award. In October 2023, Spahn & Rose acquired City Lumber Co., a lumber and building-materials supplier and truss manufacturer in Huntsville, Alabama.
“On a Thursday this past June, we were short-staffed, and Mike jumped in and finished delivering loads,” Apperson says. “Then, the next day, Mike came in on his day off and ran loads for both City Lumber and S&R Manufacturing. He really lived up to the name and went above and beyond.”
Smart started with S&R Manufacturing in 2019 and says he approaches each day enthusiastically. As soon as he clocks in, he organizes the yard, banding bundles to get them ready for delivery to job sites.
“My favorite thing about the job is the environment,” he says. “Everybody we work with is friendly, and it’s a good place to work. I want to show that I can do more and always try to give it my 100.”
Smart’s advice for other employees who aspire to the Above & Beyond Award: “Just be like Mike,” he says with a laugh. “Do what needs to be done.”
Smart enjoys shooting pool, and this past year, he has gotten into kayaking, frequently paddling on the Flint River.
The Above & Beyond Award is presented to high-performing employees who work within the Spahn & Rose family of companies, which includes Dunn Lumber, Metro Building Products, City Lumber and Still Lumber. These employees are recognized for high levels of customer care and significant contributions to their team. Employees can be nominated for the monthly Above & Beyond Award by coworkers, supervisors and customers.
When a customer submits (or walks in with) a review, any employees mentioned are nominated for the honor. Customers can also nominate employees for Above & Beyond through Spahn & Rose’s social media channels, including Metro’s Facebook page and Spahn & Rose’s Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts.
Smart and other monthly winners of the award receive a $100 Visa gift card and are eligible to be named Employee of the Year, which includes a $1,000 award.
